THE BILBAO CITY COUNCIL APPROVES THE MODIFICATION AND EXTENSION OF THE AGREEMENT WITH THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND ADIF FOR THE URBAN INTEGRATION OF THE RAILWAY IN ZORROTZA
- This morning, the Governing Board approved addendum number 1 of the aforementioned agreement, extending it for a period of four years and adjusting the annual payments.
This morning, the Bilbao City Council approved Addendum Number 1 for the Modification and Extension of the Agreement between the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, ADIF, and the City Council for the integration of the railway in the neighborhood of Zorrotza.
Under the agreement, the agreement is extended for a period of four years and the annual payments are adjusted.
On January 23, 2019, the Collaboration Protocol was signed between the Ministry of Public Works, the Bilbao City Council, and the Infrastructure Manager (ADIF) to address this issue. In fact, the objective of this protocol was to express the intention of the parties to develop the railway integration in the vicinity of the Zorrotza station of the Santander-Bilbao La Concordia narrow gauge rail line, as well as the urban transformation resulting from the corresponding works.
To carry out these actions, the agreement was signed on July 14, 2021, now extended.
The common goal for all parties is to improve railway functionality and optimize the use of space, transforming and integrating the land freed up in the urban planning of the city.
Among the proposed actions is the undergrounding of the narrow gauge line as it passes through the Zorrotza neighborhood, under the Zazpilanda area – with an approximate length of 1,933 meters, including ramps and access sections-; and, the consequent elimination of the two existing level crossings. In addition to the construction of a new underground station in the neighborhood.
All of this will involve the urban transformation of the freed-up space throughout the area.
