This afternoon, hundreds of citizens have marched down Gran Vía in Bilbao in support of Palestine and calling for a «boycott» of Israel, organized by the non-governmental organizations Begirune, CEAR in Euskadi, CVX Arrupe Elkartea, Gernika Palestina, Ongi Etorri Errefuxiatuak, Pertsonalde, and Zehar Errefuxiatuekin.
The march set off at seven in the evening from Plaza Moyúa, under a banner reading ‘Stop genocide. Europe laguntzaile (Europe accomplice)’, where numerous Palestinian flags were waved and chants of «Boycott Israel», «Palestina askatu (Freedom for Palestine)», and «It’s not a war, it’s a genocide» were heard.
After marching down Gran Vía, the demonstration reached Bilbao City Hall, where amidst music and sirens, several banners were unfurled demanding a ceasefire and humanitarian aid «now».
A statement was read there denouncing that «the crimes are multiplying». «Governments that claim to defend Human Rights act with unbearable hypocrisy. They impose sanctions for serious violations of international law, such as in the case of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but when it comes to Israel, everything is tolerated: arms sales, cooperation agreements, normal diplomatic relations…», they reproached.
They highlighted that while Russia has faced «harsh economic sanctions, exclusion from international forums, and embargoes, Israel continues to be treated as a preferred partner, even when committing equally documented crimes».
Therefore, they criticized the «obvious» double standard and its «devastating» consequences. «Not only do they undermine the credibility of international law, but they send the message to the world that some states can act with total impunity. Just two days ago, we saw a timid review of the European Union’s association agreement with Israel, which unfortunately greenlights genocide,» they warned.
