Alianza entre Athletic Club y CIC bioGune: fútbol y ciencia juntos

The Club’s commitment to scientific innovation and social impact is reflected in a partnership with the prestigious biomedical research center and the development of two projects related to sports performance and diabetes prevention.

The CIC bioGune, located in the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park, is one of Europe’s most prestigious biomedical research centers. Recognized as a «Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence,» it boasts modern scientific infrastructures led by top experts who play a vital role in the field of health and disease prevention.

The Athletic Club has found an ideal partner in CIC bioGune for its commitment to scientific innovation and social impact. Iñigo San Millán, Director of Performance, will lead the collaborative work between the two entities. This synergistic alliance begins with two separate projects that share a focus on cutting-edge research and promoting sports as a fundamental tool for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Scientific Innovation and Social Impact

The first project focuses on analyzing performance biomarkers. Through this study, the Club obtains quality data to plan improvements in the training work for young players. CIC bioGune, being a leading research center, provides analytically valuable information for the High-Performance Center directed by San Millán in Lezama.

The second project includes a social impact element by aiming to prevent diabetes at an early age. Sedentary lifestyle is a growing health concern in society, and any analysis that can detect its future impact is a step towards social well-being. In this project, Lezama serves as a control group for the research conducted by CIC bioGune.

In summary, football and science go hand in hand, a core aspect of the AC Aurrera action plan guiding the Athletic Club.

Visit by Jon Uriarte to CIC bioGune

Following the agreement between the Athletic Club and CIC bioGune, President Jon Uriarte, accompanied by Iñigo San Millán and executive Ignacio Urigüen, visited the research center’s facilities in the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park.

The Athletic Club president witnessed first-hand how a team of over 200 scientists and technicians, organized into 19 groups and 6 technological platforms, conducts groundbreaking multidisciplinary research. This research combines Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and Biomedicine to advance Precision Medicine by exploring the molecular mechanisms of diseases.

Starting this season, the Athletic Club joins this scientific team at CIC bioGune to contribute to research and raise awareness in society about the importance of science for the common good.
