It is recommended to go to the capital of Vizcaya or move around it by public transport, preferably by train or tram
Bilbao will experience various traffic cuts and diversions this Friday, April 25, as part of the operational plan established for the celebration of the FIBA Europe Cup title won by Bilbao Basket this past Wednesday in Greece, as reported by the City Council, which has advised to use public transport, preferably train or metro.
The plan designed for the reception of the Bilbao team includes «traffic cuts and diversions that will affect the mobility of vehicles and pedestrians to a greater or lesser extent, mainly in the surroundings of the City Hall and the bus route» that will travel through the streets of the Vizcaya capital.
The disruptions will occur between 2:00 pm and 10:00 pm, approximately, as indicated by the Council, until the security operation related to the reception is finalized.
The City Council has recommended that citizens who are planning to visit Bilbao in the afternoon or move around the city do so by public transport, preferably by train or metro, as «road traffic will be complicated throughout the day».
TRAFFIC CUTS
The main traffic restrictions will begin, for the most part, at 2:00 pm and will affect the surroundings of Arenal, Ernesto Erkoreka and Circular squares, as well as the bridges of the City Hall and Arenal and Gran Vía up to Moyúa.
In these areas, as specified by the City Council, there is expected to be «a large influx of people as this is where the team’s procession will take place, along with the subsequent bus route».
The Rotunda of Plaza Erkoreka and the City Hall will be closed to traffic. Also, the streets Sendeja and Viuda de Epalza will be closed to traffic and garages and parking lots will be inaccessible until the fencing is removed. However, access will be allowed to residents of Prim and Askao streets, as well as to public transport and the Arenal parking lot from Puente de la Merced, except during the bus route, when vehicular traffic will be cut off.
The last section to «return to normal» will be the one the bus will pass between City Hall and Diputación. This route will involve closures on Gran Vía -between Circular and Moyúa squares-, Astarloa -between Rodríguez Arias and Gran Vía- and Navarra street.
In any case, the City Council has warned that, «in general, it is important to consider that the schedules for traffic cuts and diversions may vary depending on the event’s evolution».
ACTIONS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Regarding the impacts on public transport, the Ernesto Erkoreka (Udaletxea) stop will be canceled for lines 11, 22, 28, 71, and 72 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, approximately.
Additionally, during the period of traffic cuts, between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, approximately, the Bilbobus service will be affected in its route.
Information about diversions, stop cancellations, and changes can be checked through the usual channels (social media, information panels, and marquees).
Due to the traffic cuts, various sections of bidegorri and some taxi stands will be affected, as well as several Bizkaibus lines and the tram.
Furthermore, the City Council has explained that a Cleaning Service team will be in charge of cleaning the spaces where a high influx of people is expected.
