The Bilbao City Council, on the occasion of the International Day against Racial Discrimination on March 21, will host a series of initiatives to raise awareness among citizens and recognize their commitment against this form of discrimination, while promoting the cultural diversity of the city.
The City Council has organized a special day against racism on Monday, March 24 at Bilborock (6:00 – 8:00 pm), as part of the anti-rumor strategy.
The program will start with the monologue «I’m not racist, but… I have apples», by Aitor Vinagret, which humorously addresses everyday prejudices and micro-racisms. An absurd comedy where the actor on stage plays various characters to create an imaginary TV set addressing racism.
Following that, different local initiatives for raising awareness and preventing racism and discrimination will be presented. These are a showcase of projects being carried out in the city, combining training, active reflection, citizen participation, intervention and direct attention using various methodologies.
Specifically, the following will be presented:
- VI Anti-Racist School: from virtual to in-person (Mamadou Ngom – Doctors of the World).
- Ongi Etorri Zinema Project (Txus Blanco – Hika Ateneo and Ongi Etorri Errefuxiatuak).
- Anti-Rumor Strategy (Ane Lezama – AMEKADI).
- Red Era Berean – Basque network against discrimination (Mayra Colado García – CITE-CCOO).
The event will be led by the Youth Group of the Local Immigration Council, who will present their new project «Empowerment Anti-Racism School for Youth» to be carried out in 2025 within the framework of the Local Immigration Council and with the support of the citizens through the participatory budgets of the Bilbao City Council.
The day will conclude with an open dialogue with the public. Those interested in attending the event on March 24 can register at antirumores@bilbao.eus.
DAMBA FESTIVAL, THIS SATURDAY 22
Bilbao will also host the fourth edition of DAMBA Festival this Saturday, March 22 at Bilborock, an event supported by various institutions that celebrates cultural diversity and highlights the value of anti-racist action through music.
The festival will offer a diverse program with artists such as Awa Fall, Novato, Titica, Havana 537, DJ Slimdate, KlassJ Gold, Novisi Percussion, African Vibes, Encuentro Latino and Thierno Diedhiou. Under the motto “Kultura Aniztasuna eta Ahalduntzea / Culture Diversity and Empowerment”, the DAMBA Festival aims to showcase the artistic expressions of diverse communities and promote intercultural meeting spaces.
OTHER INITIATIVES
In addition, the City Council has planned to develop or support other initiatives on the occasion of the International Day against Racial Discrimination. Thus, on Thursday, March 20, Zehar Errefuxiatuekin will conduct a workshop on rights and social resources for migrants living in Bilbao, at the Harreragune facilities, Basque Reception Service for Migrants.
And the exhibition “Sustrairik gabeko zuhaitzak ez du aurrera egiten – An tree without roots does not prosper” will extend its stay at Itsas Museum until March 31. The exhibition is the result of a project led by the Spanish-Brazilian photographer Angélica Dass, in collaboration with the Bilbao City Council, involving 196 students from Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Baccalaureate from six public schools in Bilbao.
The poster created to commemorate March 21 was designed by the illustrator Karina Mosqueda, who, under the motto “For diversity against racism”, presents a proposal that values shared vision and common commitment to coexistence as the heart of a tolerant and inclusive society.
