BCAM SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES THE SECOND EDITION OF THE PIANO AND VIOLIN COMPETITION ‘VILLA DE BILBAO’ WITH THE AWARD CEREMONY FOR ITS WINNERS
- The competition took place last weekend at the Sociedad Bilbaina as part of Bilbomath, the agreement signed between the City Council of Bilbao and BCAM to promote internationalization and innovation in talent attraction.
- Kontxi Claver, Councilor for Economic Development, Commerce, Tourism, and Employment of the City Council of Bilbao, attended the event and presented one of the awards.
BCAM – Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (Center of Excellence in Research BERC; accredited three times in a row with the Severo Ochoa distinction (2013, 2018, and 2021) organized the Second Edition of the ‘Villa de Bilbao’ Competition last weekend, featuring piano and violin categories.
This cultural proposal is one of the events in the ‘2M: Music & Mathematics’ program that the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics carries out within the framework of BILBOMATH, the agreement signed between BCAM and the City Council of Bilbao to promote internationalization and innovation in talent attraction.
With the Sociedad Bilbaina as the venue, more than 50 people participated in this initiative in different categories based on age (individuals born between 1993 and 2017). The goal of this ‘Villa de Bilbao’ Competition is to promote mathematical and musical culture and stimulate the musical development of young pianists. The closing event last weekend was attended by Kontxi Claver, Councilor for Economic Development, Commerce, Tourism, and Employment; Joxerramon Bengoetxea, Rector of the EHU; and José Antonio Lozano, Scientific Director of BCAM.
Here are the winners of the Piano and Violin Competition ‘Villa de Bilbao’:

- Violin Section Category F: Katalin Madariaga
- Violin Section Category G: Franchesska Forero (scholarship 500 €)
- Violin Section Category H: Gontzal Rodríguez (scholarship 750€)
- Violin Section Category I: Marianna Atria (scholarship 1000€)
- Piano Section Category B: Aroa Garcia
- Piano Section Category G: Sofia Meladze (scholarship 500)
- Piano Section Category H: Xabier Boixet
The winners of the first absolute prize in each category received a plaque and a diploma at the closing event; and all other awarded contestants received a medal and a diploma.
This event is supported by the City Council of Bilbao; UPV/EHU; Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga Conservatory in Bilbao; Sociedad Bilbaina; and Ikerbasque, Basque Foundation for Science.
