THE MAYOR OF BILBAO VISITS ERREKALDE FOLLOWING THE RECENT COMPLETION OF SEVERAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
- Projects such as the completion and opening of the Moncada street elevator and the reurbanization of Camilo Villabaso and León de Uruñuela streets, in which the City Council has invested almost three million euros.
The Mayor of Bilbao Juan Mari Aburto – accompanied by the councilors of Urban Planning, Strategic Projects, and Public Space, Asier Abaunza, and Public Works and Services, Kepa Odriozola, as well as other members of the municipal corporation – visited Errekalde this morning to see the results of three recently completed projects in this neighborhood of District 7.
These projects were carried out almost simultaneously and involved a total investment of almost three million euros.
MONCADA ELEVATOR
Operational since the beginning of last week, the new Moncada street elevator helps overcome a height difference of 6.9 meters between this street and the Errekalde-Larraskitu road.
It took a little over seven months to complete this project, which represented a municipal investment of 706,140 euros (VAT included).
The project included both the construction of the vertical elevator, providing an accessible pedestrian route, as well as the construction of stairs, in an environment where slopes and level differences between streets are significant. Specifically, in the immediate area of the project, on Moncada street and the Errekalde-Larraskitu road, the slopes exceed 7% in some cases.
This new elevator adds to the more than 70 municipal public elevators in operation in the city. In the coming months, another six elevators currently under construction will be added:
- the inclined elevator planned for the Masustegui neighborhood;
- two elevators in the Zurbaranbarri neighborhood;
- one near the Ikastola Urretxindorra between Miribilla and San Adrián;
- one between Fika and Iturribide streets (Santutxu).
- and one last one between La Cantera Square and Concepción Street in San Francisco.
Additionally, there are two approved projects in the bidding phase: in Bolueta, in the San Joaquín neighborhood; and in Masustegui, in the Lezeaga area.
MORE SPACE FOR PEDESTRIANS
The Moncada elevator is not the only project recently completed by the City Council in Errekalde, as in this neighborhood the reurbanization of two important streets in the area has also just been completed. These projects aimed to create more space for pedestrians at the expense of vehicular traffic.
León de Uruñuela, on one hand, where 912,624.40 euros (VAT included) have been invested in its improvement and pedestrianization – between Gordoniz and Esperanto. In this section, new planters and urban furniture have been installed, networks have been renewed, and the project has been completed, among other things, with the resurfacing of Anboto street, from Gordóniz to Esperanto.
And, very close to the previous one, Camilo Villabaso – in the section between Altube and León de Uruñuela, precisely – where an urban improvement intervention has also been carried out, with an investment of 1,090,188.88 euros (VAT included). Among other things, a single-lane platform with a width of 3.5 meters has been created, with parking on both sides and wider sidewalks. New benches and trash cans have also been placed, as well as a bike rack with capacity for ten bikes.
