The player has posted a message on social media explaining that an error in his alopecia treatment has caused a positive result in a UEFA control.
Yeray Álvarez has posted the following statement this afternoon on his personal Instagram account:
A few weeks ago, I was informed that I had tested positive in an anti-doping control carried out by UEFA after the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals against Manchester United. Receiving that news was a very tough blow, and honestly, I couldn’t believe it, as I have never consumed prohibited substances in my life.
Since overcoming my illness, I have been following a treatment for alopecia for years, and after studying the case, we have confirmed that the positive result occurred because I inadvertently took a preventive medication for hair loss that contained a prohibited substance.
The disciplinary procedure is currently in the instruction phase and subject to confidentiality, so I am provisionally suspended and not authorized to make additional public statements.
I want to tell all of you that I deeply regret this situation, but with the support of the Club, I am working on my defense with the conviction of being able to return to the field as soon as possible. Once the process is complete, I will provide all necessary explanations.
I want to thank Athletic Club for their support and backing from the first moment and express my trust in justice and sports institutions.
Aupa Athletic!
Yeray Álvarez
As Yeray himself has pointed out, the procedure is in the instruction phase and subject to confidentiality, so the Club is not authorized to make additional public statements on this matter. Once the process is concluded, Yeray Álvarez and Athletic Club will offer all relevant and necessary explanations.
Athletic Club wishes to express its full support to Yeray Álvarez at this time and its complete trust in the bodies responsible for resolving the case.
