El técnico navarro, que firma por una temporada, acaba de proclamarse campeón de Europa Sub-19 con la selección española y tiene una acreditada experiencia tanto en categorías inferiores femeninas como masculinas
El Athletic Club y el técnico tafallés Javi Lerga han llegado a un acuerdo para que se convierta en el entrenador del primer equipo femenino durante una temporada, hasta el 30 de junio de 2026. Con una acreditada experiencia en las categorías inferiores de la RFEF, Lerga aterriza en Lezama tras el reciente éxito de la Eurocopa Sub-19, en el que la selección española que ha dirigido se proclamó campeona en Polonia con las rojiblancas Daniela Agote, Elene Gurtubay y Ziara Vega en la convocatoria. Asimismo, formó parte del cuerpo técnico de la absoluta que se coronó como campeona del mundo en Sidney en 2023.
Lerga (45 años) ha firmado el contrato en Ibaigane junto al presidente del Athletic Club, Jon Uriarte, y en presencia del director de fútbol femenino, Xabi Arrieta. El técnico abandona la Real Federación Española de Fútbol, donde ha trabajado los últimos cuatro años y ha ocupado el puesto de seleccionador Sub-19 y Sub-20, ha sido, entre otras facetas, segundo entrenador de la Absoluta y coordinador de las selecciones inferiores, por las que ha pasado una parte importante de las jugadoras que ahora entrenará en Lezama.
Licenciado en IVEF por la UPV, fue profesor del Colegio Irabia-Izaga durante 11 años. Ha trabajado como docente en la Federación Navarra de Fútbol, como director del área de Formación y director de la Escuela de Entrenadores, además de ser seleccionador Sub-16, y en la RFEF.
Lerga comenzó su trayectoria como técnico en el fútbol masculino. Estuvo nada menos que ocho años en la Peña Sport, desde junio de 2002, dirigiendo al equipo mayor tanto en Segunda Federación como en Tercera después de pasar por las inferiores del club de Tafalla. De ahí, pasó a Tajonar, donde dirigió al filial del CA Osasuna durante una campaña, dos al Juvenil de División de Honor y otras tres temporadas en su cantera.
El sustituto de David Aznar llega acompañado de un segundo entrenador, Rubén Berrogui, con experiencia en fútbol femenino tanto en el SD Lagunak de Barañain como en el FCN Mulier y en la cantera masculina del CA Osasuna, y formando parte del cuerpo técnico de Jagoba Arrasate como analista en el primer equipo. Su última experiencia ha sido en el NK Celje esloveno con Albert Riera al mando.
El nuevo técnico zurigorri ha dicho que la llamada del Athletic supone «un gran paso en mi carrera y estoy muy agradecido a un club que apuesta de manera decidida por el fútbol femenino y que lleva muchos años haciéndolo bien. Trataré de aprovecharme de ese bagaje y del trabajo que hicieron Iraia y David».
Además, Lerga cree que esta oportunidad llega en el momento oportuno. «Tenía ganas de volver a vivir lo que es el día a día en un club», ha dicho el navarro quien decía sentirse muy identificado con la filosofía del Athletic. «Creo mucho en la gente de la casa y creo que es el valor diferencial de este club».

Lerga (45 years old) has signed the contract at Ibaigane alongside Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte, and in the presence of the director of women’s football, Xabi Arrieta. The coach leaves the Royal Spanish Football Federation, where he has worked for the past four years and has held the positions of Under-19 and Under-20 national team coach, as well as being the assistant coach of the senior team and coordinator of the youth teams, through which many players he will now coach in Lezama have passed.
A graduate in IVEF from the UPV, he was a teacher at Colegio Irabia-Izaga for 11 years. He has worked as an educator at the Navarre Football Federation, as director of the Training department and director of the Coaches’ School, as well as being the Under-16 national team coach, and at the RFEF.
Lerga began his coaching career in men’s football. He spent eight years at Peña Sport, from June 2002, coaching the first team in the Second Federation as well as in the Third Division after working with the club’s youth teams. From there, he moved to Tajonar, where he coached CA Osasuna’s reserve team for a season, two seasons with the Youth Division of Honor team, and three more seasons in the club’s youth academy.
The replacement for David Aznar is accompanied by an assistant coach, Rubén Berrogui, with experience in women’s football at SD Lagunak in Barañain and FCN Mulier, as well as in the male academy of CA Osasuna, and being part of Jagoba Arrasate’s coaching staff as an analyst in the first team. His most recent experience was at NK Celje in Slovenia with Albert Riera at the helm.
The new red and white coach has said that the call from Athletic represents «a great step in my career and I am very grateful to a club that is committed to women’s football and has been doing it well for many years. I will try to take advantage of that baggage and the work done by Iraia and David.»
Additionally, Lerga believes that this opportunity comes at the right moment. «I was eager to experience the day-to-day life in a club again,» said the Navarrese coach, who feels very identified with the philosophy of Athletic. «I believe a lot in the people from the club and I think that is the differential value of this club.»
