THE BILBAO CITY COUNCIL OPENS A NEW SPACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, THE GAZTEGUNE DE MIRIBILLA-SAN ADRIÁN
- The new municipal facility, with 160 square meters of space suitable for the needs of young people aged 10 to 16, is located at number 12 Calle Santiago de Compostela, in the lower level of the shopping center, in a pedestrian area and easily accessible.
- Its hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
- The City Council is already working on the construction of the Haurgune, which will fulfill the municipal commitment made in the 2025 Participatory Budgets to provide Haurgune and Gaztegune to these two neighborhoods.
The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, accompanied by the Councilor for Youth and Sports in the Bilbao City Council, Itxaso Erroteta, and municipal spokespersons, among other guests, visited the new Gaztegune de Miribilla-San Adrián this morning.
The new municipal facility, with 160 square meters of space, is designed for young people in the area to enjoy healthy leisure in a safe environment with opportunities for personal, social, and educational development. The Gaztegune de Miribilla-San Adrián, the tenth in the municipal network, opens its doors after months of construction work, which have served to adapt it to the needs of young people between 10 and 16 years old.
The Gaztegune has a Maker area, a space based on the Do it yourself philosophy (an open-access area for users to experiment) where they can also enjoy equipment and activities related to the Bilbao Gazte STEAM Strategy, promoting scientific and technological vocations among young people with activities such as Green Power, robotics, LEGO programming, 3D printing, etc. It also has a large open space with tables for studying, group work, activities scheduled in the Gaztegune, and an area for dynamic activities such as dancing or a relaxation area.
Thus, the new municipal facility aims to be a space for healthy, attractive, and dynamic leisure for young people in the area. The vehicular language will be Basque, thus responding to the demand of families and the young participants in the design of the new facility.
SPECIAL INAUGURATION WEEKEND
The Gaztegune will have a special program today and tomorrow, April 11 and 12, the opening weekend, where there will be 4 «txokos» to experience different activities also offered by the Gaztegune: podcasts, robotics, recycled fashion, and 3D printing. In addition, visitors can also participate in the participatory mural or enjoy a DJ workshop.
Similarly, it will offer programming during Easter week. Among the Easter week activities or workshops, highlights include polymer clay, pyrography, RUBIK, watercolor, or dance. Additionally, those interested can simply come to enjoy the space and socialize with young people of the same age.
The hours of the Gaztegune are 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. However, this schedule may be modified later, adjusting its operation to the schedule of the surrounding schools and the needs of the minors. The programming of the Gaztegune will also be adapted based on the proposals of the users.
PARTICIPATORY PROCESS WITH SCHOOLS, FAMILIES, AND NEIGHBORHOODS
Before the opening, the Bilbao City Council launched a reflection and participation period through which it collected the opinions, viewpoints, and proposals of over 200 students from primary and secondary schools in the area – Miribilla, Iruarteta, Urretxindorra, San Adrián, and Pagasarribide, over 50 families in sessions with the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) of the same educational centers, and representatives of neighborhood associations (Miribilla Bizirik and San Adrián).
Around 350 people have participated in the process conducted between February and March, a process through which user and family priorities have been identified, the opening hours have been agreed upon, and activities have been planned for the Gaztegune, which will be completed as young users share their preferences and hobbies.
The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has announced that «the City Council is already working on the opening, in a few months, of the Haurgune. It will be located in a space adjacent to the Gaztegune and aimed at children aged 3 to 11. With this project, the commitment made by the City Council in the 2025 Participatory Budgets to provide Haurgune and Gaztegune to the neighborhoods of Miribilla and San Adrián will be fulfilled.»
