THE BILBAO CITY COUNCIL WILL REURBANIZE DOCTOR ORNILLA STREET IN TXURDINAGA, A PROJECT PRIORITIZED BY THE RESIDENTS WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE AUZOKIDE PLANA
- Almost 1.5 million euros have been reserved for the execution of a project that, once awarded and work commenced, will have a completion period of eight months.
- The intervention will take place in the section between the roundabout that separates Txomin Garay and Artalandio up to the adjacent pedestrian crossing to the Traffic Management and Emergency Coordination Center of Euskadi.
- One of the sidewalks – the one not adjacent to Parque Europa – will be widened, and vegetation will be included, along with new urban furniture, to create a more accessible sidewalk for the entire population.
The Bilbao City Council will address the improvement and reurbanization of Doctor Ornilla Street in the Txurdinaga neighborhood in the coming months. This project is part of the Auzokide Plana and, therefore, has been prioritized by the residents of District 3.
This was approved this morning by the municipal Government Board, both the project that will allow this intervention and the budget allocated for it. A total of 1,497,680.07 euros (VAT included) will be reserved for a project that, once awarded and work commenced, will have a completion period of eight months.
The section of the street covered by the project extends from the roundabout of Avenida Txomin Garat and Artalandio to the adjacent signalized pedestrian crossing towards Avenida Gabriel Aresti and the Traffic Management and Emergency Coordination Center of Euskadi. A stretch approximately 350 meters long and 20 meters wide.
This is a heavily trafficked route for both vehicles and buses, as well as pedestrians, as it connects the neighborhoods of Txurdinaga and Santutxu. Additionally, it serves as an entrance – and runs parallel – to Parque Europa, one of the largest green areas in Bilbao.
However, the sidewalk next to the park is not within the scope of the intervention. In this case, the approved project includes a significant intervention in the sidewalk on the right side as you descend the street.
Specifically, the planned works include:
- The widening of the sidewalk. This widening will be particularly significant in the section in front of the Birjinetxe Care Center and Bekoetxe Day Center, increasing from the current 2.9 meters to 5.8 meters.
- The renewal of affected municipal services, such as sanitation, water supply, lighting, etc.
- The removal of the median to maximize the street section for pedestrian use without minimizing the existing infrastructure for vehicular traffic.
- The redistribution of the roadway so that, in the future, for the execution of a new bike lane segment within the area, this will require minimal intervention.
- Resurfacing of the Dr. Ornilla-Artalandio roundabout, repairing damages and maintaining the same road markings.
- The reorganization of parking areas, maintaining the loading zone for the Day Center, as well as the space for People with Reduced Mobility located next to the care facility.
- Renovation of the sidewalk pavement, maintaining the aesthetics of the surrounding areas.
The installation of new urban furniture is also planned, as well as the planting of vegetation on the new sidewalk that will emerge after the expansion. All with the aim of providing a space for walking, shade, and relaxation. This represents a significant improvement compared to the current situation, as the area lacks vegetation.
