The call for fantastic genre short film projects in Basque language ends this Friday
The Bilbao FANT Fantastic Film Festival, organized by the City Council of the Basque capital, will premiere this evening ‘Una ballena’ by Pablo Hernando, from Vitoria, in what will be the second event of the preFANT cycle.
As explained by the City Council, the premiere will take place in a session open to the public at 7:30 pm at Room 1 of the Golem – Alhóndiga cinemas with free entry until full capacity is reached, although it is necessary to collect invitations beforehand.
The film was presented this morning at a press conference, with the presence of the Councilor for Culture and Governance, Gonzalo Olabarria, Pablo Hernando himself, actor Ramón Barea, one of the protagonists, and FANT director Amaia Domingo.
‘Una ballena’ is the third solo feature film by the filmmaker from Vitoria, who participated in the official competition of the Sitges Film Festival last year. The work is, as highlighted in the presentation, a combination of genres, with elements of film noir, science fiction, horror, and thriller.
The film tells the story of Ingrid, a professional assassin «with a natural ability to infiltrate and disappear,» who finds herself caught between two rival smugglers vying for control of the port.
«But what initially appears as a story of criminals subtly delves into dreamlike terrain to sincerely embrace the most fantastic aspects of a narrative that surprises and captivates the viewer as it unfolds,» as announced by the City Council.
The film, which will be commercially released on Friday, March 28, stars Ingrid García Jonsson, Ramón Barea, Asier Tartás, and Kepa Errasti, with a script and direction by Pablo Hernando.
The FANT organization has highlighted Hernando as «perhaps one of the most interesting young filmmakers in the national scene.» Among his works are ‘Cabás,’ his debut feature, and ‘Berserker,’ his second film, which won the Special New Waves Award at the Seville European Film Festival.
He has also participated in the collaborative film ‘Esa Sensación’ with Juan Cavestany and Julián Génisson, and the short film ‘El ruido Solar,’ which was awarded the Silver Biznaga for Best Direction at the 2021 Malaga Film Festival.
This Wednesday’s event is the second meeting of this edition’s PreFANT cycle, following the premiere of ‘Daniela Forever’ in February. Additionally, on April 10, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,’ the film that inspired the poster for the 31st edition of FANT Bilbao, will be screened.
UNTIL THIS FRIDAY
On the other hand, the City Council has reminded that, in addition to the screening of fantastic genre films, the FANT festival aims to support audiovisual creation, following the strategic line of promoting cultural creation in the city within the Bilbao Culture Strategic Plan 2023 – 2033.
In this regard, FANT opened in January the call for the submission of projects for the production of a fantastic genre short film in Basque, whose deadline is this upcoming Friday, March 28.
This award is endowed with 5,000 euros and facilitates the winners in the realization of a short film. Each participant can submit a maximum of two projects, which cannot exceed 20 minutes in duration.
