The Bilbao-Fantastic Film Festival – FANT, organized by the Bilbao City Council, will celebrate its 31st edition from May 2 to 10, and the honorees for this 2025 are already known, joining the Fantrobia Award that director Enrique Buleo will receive.
FANT Bilbao will award the Fantasy Star Award, the Festival’s main award, to British actress, director, and screenwriter Alice Lowe. She is currently one of the most recognized women in the fantasy genre. Her latest feature film is «Timestalker,» premiered at the Sitges Film Festival. She is known to the general public for her work in the television series «Black Mirror» and «Darkplace.» Additionally, she has written, directed, and starred in the acclaimed dark comedy «Prevenge» (2016) and starred in and co-wrote «Sightseers» (2012). As an actress, she has a long career in film and television.
On the other hand, the Festival will honor two figures with extensive careers with the FANT Honor Award: Daniel Monzón and Saturnino García.
Daniel Monzón was a journalist and film critic before embarking on his directing career, which has led him to direct seven films so far. He made his debut in 1999 with «The Heart of the Warrior,» a film that will have a special screening at FANT 2025 and for which he received two awards at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, the Best International Film Award at the Montreal Fant-Asia Film Festival, and the Best Fantastic Film Award at Fantasporto in Oporto, Portugal. In 2009, he directed «Cell 211,» perhaps his most well-known work, which won eight Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Another of his films, «El niño,» received sixteen Goya nominations, while his latest work, «The Laws of the Border,» was nominated in six categories at the highest film awards in Spain.
Saturnino García is a native of León but adopted by the Basque Country who, among other awards, received the Goya Awards for Best New Actor, Best Actor at the Sitges International Film Festival, Best Actor at El Mundo del País Vasco, and Best Actor at the Valladolid Film Festival, for his portrayal of the protagonist in the film «Justino, an Elderly Killer,» which will also be screened during FANT 2025 in a special screening. With a long career, he remains active to this day: in 2023, he starred in «Alimañas,» a film directed by Jordi Sánchez and Pep Anton Gómez.
Alice Lowe and Saturnino García will receive the award during the closing ceremony of the 31st edition of FANT, on Friday, May 9, at Sala BBK. On the same day, Lowe’s latest screening, «Timestalker,» will be shown.
