The Aranzadi Science Society, with the support of the Mobility and Sustainability Area of the City Council of Bilbao, has launched a photographic exhibition that, under the name «Hidden Biodiversity of Bilbao», showcases a sample of the minority, unknown, and hidden species of the city.

The Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Mobility and Sustainability, Nora Abete, participated today in the opening of the exhibition that can be visited until June 22nd at the Zubiarte Shopping Center. «With this exhibition, we seek to bring nature closer to the citizens of Bilbao, since city life often separates us from the nature that surrounds us without leaving the city«, explained Abete.

The photographs capture a varied sample of species, often unknown to a large number of people living in the city, as well as natural spaces equally unknown to the majority of the population, such as the different ecosystems existing in Bilbao.

For this exhibition, 10 species of unique biodiversity of Bilbao have been chosen, such as a lichen, a plant, three invertebrates, an amphibian, a reptile, a bird, and two mammals. Additionally, the exhibition also includes photographs of wooded ecosystems (native forests and forest plantations), freshwater ecosystems (rivers, streams, and wetlands), herbaceous-shrub ecosystems (countryside), and urban ecosystems (parks, gardens, and built areas).

«Visitors to this exhibition can participate in a survey to assess the level of knowledge among the public about these unique species and ecosystems of Bilbao«, said Nora Abete.

Similarly, as part of this initiative, a workshop will be held for families to discover Bilbao’s biological treasures and on Friday, June 20th, there will be a guided tour, led by Aranzadi experts, to uncover the natural values of the Monte Cabras area.
