A woman has died in a fire at a building in downtown Bilbao, where at least nine other people have been injured. She was one of the residents of the apartment where the fire started, located at number 28 Labayru Street in Bilbao, as confirmed by municipal sources to Europa Press.
The fire broke out minutes after 8:00 a.m. on the first floor of a wooden structure building — at least five stories high — on Labayru Street, corner with Carmelo Gil, also affecting the second floor.
Residents of the building had to be evacuated by firefighters, although some left the premises on their own. The fire caused a thick black smoke that could be seen from various parts of the city.
At 9:20 a.m., health workers and firefighters were still on-site attending to the fire victims, totaling ten. Eight individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, with two other residents in critical condition, a man and a woman in cardiac arrest. CPR was performed on the woman, who unfortunately passed away. At least five neighbors were evacuated to hospitals.
