The City Council of Bilbao, as part of the events marking the 30th anniversary of Development Cooperation in the city, will screen the film «Black Butterflies» at Sala BBK on June 19, winner of the 2025 Goya Award for Best Animated Film. A discussion with the director, David Baute, will follow the screening.
The film portrays three real stories about the impact of climate change on the lives of three women, Tanit, Valeria, and Shaila, from very different parts of the world, but with one thing in common: they lose everything due to the effects of global warming and are forced to migrate.
Black Butterflies, aiming to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of climate change, has had a prestigious journey through international festivals and was presented in November at the United Nations headquarters, where it was warmly received by the New York audience.
This work encompasses over twelve years of research by David Baute, from Tenerife, into the phenomena caused by global warming and climate change as one of the main drivers of migratory movements worldwide. The film showcases exquisite 2D animation that takes viewers on a journey through the Caribbean, India, desert areas of the Horn of Africa, and major urban centers like Paris, Dubai, and Nairobi.
Access to the screening will be free, but prior invitation is required (subject to seating availability). The post-screening discussion will feature the film’s director, David Baute, in a session moderated by Marta García Terán, Director of Advocacy and Social Participation at Zehar Errefuxiatuekin.
30TH ANNIVERSARY
This initiative is part of the various events scheduled for the 30th Anniversary of Development Cooperation by the City Council of Bilbao and its commitment to international solidarity and the creation of a more just and equitable world.
Over these three decades, Bilbao has invested over 60 million euros in more than 2000 projects in over thirty countries, collaborating with Euskal Fondoa and over 60 local NGOs and associations from Bilbao represented in the Municipal Cooperation Council.
The main areas of action include access to water and sanitation; empowering women and combating gender-based violence; education and training; and humanitarian and emergency aid.
During this anniversary, a diverse program of activities has been launched – including the screening of Black Butterflies – in collaboration with the Bilbao Cooperation Council and local NGOs, open to the public. The anniversary will culminate in a grand final gala at Azkuna Zentroa on November 13.
