“EXPODISTRITO” RETURNS TO BRING ITINERANT EXHIBITIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND PAINTING TO THE NEIGHBORHOODS OF THE VILLA DURING THIS SPRING
- The exhibitions can be enjoyed at the Municipal Centers of San Inazio-Ibarrekolanda, Castaños, Otxarkoaga, Begoña, Santutxu, San Francisco, La Bolsa, Abando, and Errekalde.
- The offer includes four painting exhibitions and four photography exhibitions, featuring works by artists K-Toño Frade, Álvaro Hidalgo Trueba, Rosa María Sánchez Núñez, the Nahiarte project, and photographers Leonor Uriarte Ibarrondo, Begoña Elexpe, Olga Ruiz, Sergio Verde, and the Photobat association.
- The EXPODISTRITO program is an initiative by the City Council aimed at decentralizing the artistic expressions of the Villa and introducing the public to the work of emerging and established artists.
EXPODISTRITO, the cycle of decentralized temporary exhibitions organized by the Bilbao City Council, returns this spring with a new edition featuring photography and painting proposals.
The artists participating in these exhibitions are: Leonor Uriarte Ibarrondo (painting); K-Toño Frade (painting); Álvaro Hidalgo Trueba (painting); Rosa María Sánchez Núñez (photography); Begoña Elexpe (photography); Olga Ruiz and Sergio Verde (photography); the artistic creation space for individuals with psychical or intellectual disabilities Nahiarte (painting); and the photographic association Photobat in Bilbao.
In this new edition, residents of the Villa will be able to enjoy the artistic proposals of Expodistrito at the Municipal Centers of San Inazio-Ibarrekolanda, Castaños, Otxarkoaga, Begoña, Santutxu, San Francisco, La Bolsa, Abando, and Errekalde, from April 2 to June 30. Two of the exhibitions, «Retratos de un barrio» and «Galerna Intercultural,» were also available in the first quarter of the year but continue to be offered this spring.
EXPODISTRITO includes an exhibition of the painting work of K-Toño Frade, a renowned graphic chronicler, poster artist, caricaturist, painter, and costumbrista writer, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 73.

EXPODISTRITO PROGRAM FROM APRIL TO JUNE
LEONOR URIARTE IBARRONDO. “Dibujando silencios”. The exhibition includes panoramic images portraying landscapes of Las Landas, taken by the author during numerous trips to visit her son hospitalized during the pandemic. The poetic intensity of the photographs conveys to the viewer the moment of deep uncertainty in which they were taken.

K-TOÑO FRADE. “Omenaldia bere 80. urteurrenean / Homenaje en su 80 aniversario”. This painting exhibition showcases a small sample of the extensive works of the late graphic chronicler K-Toño, José Antonio Frade Villar, brought together as a tribute to what would have been his 80th anniversary. The pieces have been donated by numerous individuals and entities, under the coordination of the editorial label Bilbao Gloria Mundi.

ÁLVARO HIDALGO TRUEBA. “Emociones de colores”. The exhibition features a selection of paintings and prints where the author uses color and texture to convey emotions. Each piece invites the viewer to find their own interpretation, thus completing the painting in their own imagination.

ROSA MARÍA SÁNCHEZ NÚÑEZ. “Arte Solidario”. This exhibition aims to raise funds for the Research Scholarship of the disease suffered by the artist’s daughter, Leiomyosarcoma. Donations are intended for GEIS (Spanish Group for Sarcoma Research). Rosa María Sánchez Núñez is a self-taught painter whose work intertwines diverse styles and themes.

PHOTOBAT. “Bizkaia objetiboan / Bizkaia en el objetivo”. The Photobat photographic association in Bilbao celebrates its 10th anniversary with an exhibition inviting visitors to discover Bizkaia through the unique perspective of 31 photographers. From the shores washed by the Cantabrian Sea to the landscape and urban life of Bilbao, the exhibition seeks to highlight the natural beauty of Bizkaia, as well as its history, culture, architecture, and traditions. The exhibition will open on April 2 with a guided tour at 7:00 pm at the La Bolsa Municipal Center.

BEGOÑA ELEXPE. “Retratos de un barrio”. This exhibition immerses the viewer in the essence of the historic neighborhoods of Bilbao through striking photographs capturing the diversity, vitality, and authenticity of its residents and businesses, while also promoting the importance of responsible, ethical, and valuable consumption. The exhibition is promoted by Bilbaohistoriko Elkartea and the Association of Merchants of San Francisco, Bilbao la Vieja, and Zabala.

OLGA RUIZ and SERGIO VERDE. “Kulturarteko Galerna / Galerna Intercultural”. Bilbao photographer OLGA RUIZ, with the collaboration of photographer SERGIO VERDE and the digital creators team Kamanga, present an audiovisual document of the festive day of the “Galerna Intercultural,” held in May 2024 in Plaza de las Mujeres, as part of the “Plan Zubirik 2025” of the neighborhoods of San Francisco, Zabala, and Bilbao La Vieja. A showcase of the richness of the different cultures coexisting in these Bilbao neighborhoods.

NAHIARTE – FANT 2025. “Zeren beldur? / ¿Quién dijo miedo?”. NAHIARTE is a space for artistic creation for individuals with psychical or intellectual disabilities. Since 2023, their artists have been conducting a painting exhibition referencing the FANT Bilbao Festival.

The EXPODISTRITO program is an initiative of the Culture Department of the Bilbao City Council aimed at decentralizing the artistic expressions of the Villa and introducing the public to the work of emerging artists, as well as serving as a showcase for established artists. This initiative to support the artistic and creative sector is one of the pillars of the strategy to boost creation and innovation in the Villa outlined in the Cultural Strategic Plan of Bilbao 2023-2033.
