THE BILBAO CITY COUNCIL WILL INVEST ALMOST ONE AND A HALF MILLION EUROS IN THE RENOVATION OF SEVERAL STREETS PERPENDICULAR TO SAN FRANCISCO STREET
- The project, framed within the Zubirik and Auzokide plans, includes the streets Amparo, Arnotegi, Cantera, and La Laguna.
- The aim of the works is to improve and optimize the existing sidewalks and roads, with the same aesthetic as the recently renovated San Francisco street.
The Bilbao City Council will address in the coming months the improvement and reurbanization of several roads adjacent to San Francisco street. A project framed within the Zubirik (analysis and feasibility) and Auzokide (execution) plans and, therefore, designed to improve the lives of people living in the neighborhoods of Bilbao La Vieja, San Francisco, and Zabala, and prioritized by them.
This morning, the Municipal Government Board approved both the project that will allow this intervention and the budget allocated for that purpose. A total of 1,453,189.94 euros (including VAT) will be allocated for a project that, once awarded and work started, will have a twelve-month execution period.
Specifically, the scope of the work will cover:
- Amparo street.
- Arnotegi street, from San Francisco to Gimnasio.
- Cantera street, from San Francisco to Gimnasio.
- La Laguna street, from San Francisco to Cortes.
The project’s goal is to optimize and improve the existing sidewalks and roads while maintaining as many parking spaces as possible. The sidewalks will be widened following the same aesthetic as the recently renovated San Francisco street.
In addition, the lighting will be modernized and, where possible, the light points on the facades will be lowered to the sidewalks. Also, the rest of the municipal services will be renovated -especially sanitation- and vegetation will be included where possible and appropriate.
Looking at each street, in Amparo street, the two parking lanes will be removed and a single platform will be created, and the sidewalks will be widened to over three meters each.
In Arnotegi street, the absence of accesses to buildings and premises on the left sidewalk as you go down will be used to create a ramp-style sidewalk between 2.28 and 2.80 meters wide. On the right sidewalk, the stairs will be maintained, but they will be given a more uniform distribution and grouped in threes to improve accessibility conditions.
In La Laguna street, one of the two parking lanes will be removed to expand the sidewalks to 2.90 and 3.20 meters wide respectively.
Finally, on Cantera street, in addition to expanding the sidewalks as much as possible, the renovation of the monumental staircase that connects San Francisco and Cortes will be addressed; and the street will be adapted to ensure accessibility to the two existing buildings on that street. Ramps with slopes not exceeding 8% will be created, and in areas where it is not possible, the current steps will be replaced with new ones that comply with accessibility regulations.
There will also be rest areas and new flowerbeds between the ramp and the stairs on this street.
All stair sections and ramps will be equipped with handrails and new railings.
