THE MAYOR OF BILBAO PRESIDES A NEW MEETING OF THE PARTICIPATION TABLE ON RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF ITS ACTION PLAN

  • Juan Mari Aburto has participated in this meeting, attended by up to fifteen communities of nine different religions, in a space dedicated to reflecting and developing actions that promote freedom of conscience and religion in Bilbao.
  • The City Council of Bilbao develops policies related to the public management of religious diversity at the municipal level, in order to understand the current socio-religious reality and facilitate its recognition among the different sensitivities present in the city.

The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has presided over a new meeting of the Participation Table on Religious Diversity this Friday, in which fifteen communities of nine different religions participate, through sessions aimed at reflecting and developing actions to promote the exercise of freedom of conscience and religion in a context of city coexistence.

During the meeting, Mayor Juan Mari Aburto, who chaired this Table for the third time, emphasized that «I want to reaffirm our commitment to the positive management of this diversity, which is reflected in our policies, plans, and actions. But we cannot walk this path alone; we need your help, contributions, and guidance to continue advancing together» he recalled.

The meeting began with the presentation of the Report on Religious Diversity and Minority Confessions in Bilbao, developed with the Pedro Arrupe Institute of Human Rights at the University of Deusto, and then the follow-up on measures from the Action Plan of the Charter for the Management of Religious Diversity was discussed, where some measures being implemented were presented.

MANAGEMENT OF DIVERSITY

It is important to note that this Participation Table on Religious Diversity is one of the measures planned in the III Municipal Plan Bilbao Intercultural City, with the aim of achieving positive management of diversity of origin, ethnicity, culture, language, or religion to promote social cohesion and intercultural coexistence in the city.

Thanks to the establishment of this forum, the City Council develops policies related to the public management of religious diversity at the municipal level, seeking, on one hand, knowledge of the socio-religious reality present in Bilbao and, on the other hand, recognition; that is, the articulation between the public administration and the different religious entities and sensitivities.

Representatives of the Catholic Church, the Evangelical Council of Euskadi, the Evangelical Church of Philadelphia, the Evangelical Spanish Church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Assalam Mosque, the Bader Mosque, the Al Furkan Mosque, the Rekalde Mosque, the Mourides Brotherhood, the Baha’i Community, the Hindu Community, Taoists, and the Buddhist Community participate in the Participation Table on Religious Diversity. The Pedro Arrupe Institute of Human Rights at the University of Deusto and the Ellacuría Foundation also participate as Technical Secretariat.
