The music has once again filled the air on Friday, April 11th, at the BAS Festival, Bilbao Sacred Art, organized by the City Council of Bilbao, featuring The Tallis Scholars, who have commemorated the 500th anniversary of the birth of Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina with their performance.
Under the direction of Peter Phillips, they have performed a repertoire including pieces such as “Missa Ut re mi fa sol la”, “Laudate pueri dominum”, “Media vita”, “Tribulationes civitatum”, “Timor et tremor”, and “Tu es Petrus”. Highlights of the program included a lesser-known but exceptional mass and some of the composer’s best motets. Additionally, they included some works by Orlandus Lassus, as he was nearly contemporary to Palestrina and their combination was both fascinating and contrasting.
The Tallis Scholars have established themselves as one of the leading exponents of sacred Renaissance music internationally, thanks to their recordings—awarded numerous prizes worldwide—and their concerts. During the 2024-2025 season, the ensemble has performed in Japan, the United States, and East Asia, as well as in London, in addition to their regular program in Europe and the United Kingdom.
This performance was the second of five concerts that, under the title “Mirespena / Admiración,” the festival will offer at the Church of the Incarnation until Monday, April 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m., featuring both local and international performers.
Tomorrow, Saturday, April 12th, will feature London Handel Players, dedicating their program to Bach’s religious cantatas, the ultimate figure of late Baroque. This program will showcase the voices of soprano Jessica Cale, mezzo-soprano Mercé Bruguera Abelló, tenor Benedict Munden, and bass Tristan Hambleton.
In the following days, the program will continue with performances by the Bilbao Choral Society (April 13th) and La Spagna (April 14th).
