As every spring, the City Council of Bilbao has launched the traditional Bilbainadas Contest, in collaboration with Radio Nervión and Telebilbao. The purpose of this contest is to encourage the creation of new songs about the current events of the Villa.
The call will remain open from April 15 to June 2. Authors with original proposals, which have not been previously awarded or published, can participate in the contest. Compositions can be submitted through the City Council’s website, by filling out a form with the author’s information and attaching both the song lyrics and a recording of it in mp3, wma, or ogg format.
The jury will select the best Bilbainadas in Basque and Spanish, each receiving a cash prize of 955 euros, along with a Don Diego sculpture. Additionally, eight honorable mentions will be awarded, each receiving 420 euros and a plaque.
The contest rules can be found at this link.
Bilbainadas are part of the cultural heritage of the Villa and have the ability to create a narrative about Bilbao, its past, present, and future. They are a tool to express and disseminate Bilbao’s historical identity in terms of its cultural and heritage legacy, allowing residents to become aware of their roots. This cultural expression is in line with the guidelines outlined in Bilbao’s Cultural Strategic Plan 2023-2033.
Last year’s award-winning songs featured on the Bilbainadas album can be listened to on Bandcamp and Youtube.
